The media has become an all-encompassing, inevitable part our lives and its influence is unavoidable. There is no doubt the media has its many advantages, but it also has various disadvantages and serious issues, particularly in its representation and image of women. In modern society, with the fast pace of life and the new media technologies, newspapers, magazines, television and the Internet have been shaping the gender relationship and influencing the social acknowledgment and value judgment on women ‘s role in society. The distorted images and under-representation of women and girls in the media has long been a serious issue and subject of concern. There are much fewer women than men in almost all forms of mainstream media, and those who do appear are often portrayed in very stereotypical ways, mostly performing domestic chores such as doing the laundry or cooking; as sex objects who exist primarily to serve men; as victims of beatings, harassment, sexual assault and even murder, who are incapable of protecting themselves. This subordinate representation of women in the media is extremely damaging and devastating especially for younger generations. Sexualised imagery of women and girls across media platforms is so commonplace and widely accepted that it generally fails to resonate as an inequality issue. This objectification and treatment of women distorts the values of real women, reinforces sexist attitudes and has negative impacts on body image, se~J~worth, health and social status of women in general.
